ELVERSON, PA — Singer Equipment Company proudly celebrates the 100th birthday of Henry Singer, who served as president of the company for more than 50 years and helped shape its growth, culture and lasting impact. A World War II veteran, respected foodservice industry leader and beloved member of the Singer family, Henry’s influence continues to guide the company today. 

Henry continues to inspire those around him through his leadership, compassion, and genuine belief in the power of relationships. His example remains deeply woven into Singer Equipment Company and the foodservice industry he helped advance. 

After serving on the front lines in France during World War II, Henry attended Colgate University through the GI Bill, graduating Phi Beta Kappa in just three years. In 1950, he returned home to join the family business and work alongside his father, Singer founder Frederick Singer. 

Henry began his career with Singer more than 75 years ago, when the company was still a small, regional restaurant supply business. He brought an ambitious vision for what Singer could become and believed the company needed to continually grow, innovate, and stay ahead of a changing industry. 

As president of Singer Equipment Company, Henry expanded the company’s sales organization, geographic reach, product offerings, facilities and transportation capabilities. A strong believer in innovation, he was an early adopter of computers and CAD technology, and he championed modern warehousing and distribution methods, including the development of high-cube, single-level facilities outside traditional city centers. He also helped establish Singer’s kitchen design and installation services, laying the foundation for many of the comprehensive foodservice solutions the company provides today. 

Henry encouraged Singer to think beyond the traditional role of an equipment dealer. Under his leadership, the company grew from a local dealership into a regional leader offering foodservice supplies, disposables, janitorial and sanitation products, kitchen design and fabrication services. 

Henry also made a lasting impact throughout the industry. He served as president of the Foodservice Equipment Dealers Association and helped establish influential industry organizations, including IFED and Supply America. In recognition of his leadership and contributions to the foodservice industry, Henry received an honorary Doctorate of Foodservice from the North American Association of Food Equipment Manufacturers. In 2003, he was also given the distinction of becoming the first person inducted into the Foodservice Equipment & Supplies Hall of Fame. 

While Henry’s accomplishments are significant, his greatest influence can be seen in the way he has treated people throughout his life and career. Across the foodservice industry, countless colleagues, customers and partners still speak about the time he gave them, the conversations they shared and the way he made them feel valued. His belief in honesty, accountability, and long-term relationships shaped not only the way he conducted business, but also a culture that continues to guide Singer today. 

Under the Singer family’s leadership, the company has grown from a small business with fewer than eight employees and less than $1 million in annual revenue into a national organization generating over $1 billion in revenue and employing more than 1,200 people. Today, Singer is the fourth-largest foodservice equipment and supplies dealer in the United States, serving customers nationwide while remaining privately owned and operated under its third generation of family leadership. 

Henry’s vision helped set Singer on that path, and his influence can be seen in generations of employees, customers, vendor partners, and family members who continue to carry the company forward.
